Chairwoman Johnson Statement at Press Conference on the America COMPETES Act
(Washington, DC) – Today, Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) joined Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Committee Chairs for a press conference on the America COMPETES Act of 2022, which includes transformative, bipartisan legislation from the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson’s (D-TX) statement is below.
It is a pleasure to be here with Speaker Pelosi and my fellow Committee Chairs, who have played important roles in bringing the America COMPETES Act to the Floor.
I am excited that we are voting in the House today on this transformative piece of legislation.
It has been an honor to join in leading the effort to ensure the United States is able to compete on a global scale.
As Chairwoman of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, I’m especially proud of the Science Committee bills that are included in COMPETES.
With this legislation, we are making critically needed investments to strengthen our national innovation capabilities.
We are building clean energy solutions, addressing the climate crisis, reinforcing our national security, enhancing our semiconductor research and manufacturing capabilities, and so much more.
We are also taking historic and much-needed action to build a strong and diverse STEM workforce, something that has been a priority of mine throughout my time in Congress.
Provisions in this bill were built with rigorous input from the scientific community, industry, academia, and other stakeholders on what they need most to succeed in the 21st century.
I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to get us to this point.
And I’d especially like to thank the Ranking Member of the Science Committee, Mr. Frank Lucas, for his partnership on the strong bipartisan provisions that are included in America COMPETES.
The bill we are voting on today is critical to the future competitiveness and wellbeing of our nation. I look forward to its swift passage in the House, and to working with the Senate to bring this to the President’s desk as soon as we can.
